Orissa's Battle with Nalco Mining Corporation
In the region of Orissa, North India, many village communities are being displaced from their rightful homes and land by the mining corporation, Nalco. They are receiving no compensation or alternative residence and Nalco is threatening further communities with the same fate.
WIDA (International Rural Development of Weaker Section in India) is supporting villagers in the fight for their rights to their land, helping them voice their case. However the land is rich in bauxite and mining activities are steadily increasing.
In addition, worrying environmental damage to the land is occurring as the mining activities expand. Reservoirs have been created for toxic waste dumping, deforestation for land access and a road for industrial traffic are among the damage incurred.
